About Us
Elk Grove Community Foundation
The Elk Grove Unified School District is the largest school district in Northern California, having more than doubled its enrollment in the past decade. As the district opens new schools, students and staff continue to maintain a level of excellence in academic achievement.
The school district has been in existence since 1959, when about 3,000 students from seven elementary districts joined with their high school district in a unification effort.
In 2008, the district serves about 62,000 students in 39 elementary schools, nine comprehensive middle and high schools and four alternative high schools.
Elk Grove Unified’s boundaries encompass 320 square miles and include all of the new city of Elk Grove, a portion of the cities of Sacramento and Rancho Cordova and many acres of rural country and suburban developments in southern Sacramento County.
Despite the district’s size, our seven-member Board of Education has remained committed to being leaders in innovation. During the 2006/2007 school year, the district implemented class size reduction in Kindergarten through sixth grade – an unprecedented commitment in the state of California.
In addition, the district has continued to guide students onto paths that will take our young people beyond 12th grade and into colleges and careers. The district’s commitment to helping students plan their adult lives begins with discussions as early as the fourth grade, and continues through the middle and high school levels. This effort is all part of the district’s goal of creating the 21st Century school system.
As the district's commitment to public education continues to flourish, Elk Grove and its neighbors will thrive as strong, productive and healthy communities.
On July 1, 2000, the small town of Elk Grove became California's first incorporated city of the 21st century with a population of more than 60,000. In 2006 that number exceeded 130,000. The need to assist students in achieving post-secondary education is greater than ever.
The Elk Grove Community Foundation now administers more than half a million dollars and in 2008 awarded 184 scholarships. The Foundation will continue to grow along with the city of Elk Grove, helping more students succeed each year.
